Spring fever is at full force within me and it brings about a natural urge to clean and refresh my home, it also offers me a unique chance to clear out the clutter in my heart and mind.
This season, I felt called to do some deep soul searching versus just tidying up my physical space.
I began a deep process of spiritual growth and personal development by reflecting on what I carry inside.
This act of "cleaning my soul" symbolized renewal, forgiveness, and the capacity to embrace new beginnings.

The Connection Between Physical Cleaning and Inner Renewal
Every spring, the ritual of cleaning the house can spark a similar process for cleaning the soul.
Moving from room to room, dusting off cobwebs, and vacuuming under furniture often leads to moments of quiet reflection.
I've written several blogs about this over the years. (See links below.)
This spring, with more time on my hands (find out why here) and fewer work commitments, the cleaning has gone beyond the surface - literally.
It has become a journey of self-reflection for me. (Check out my memoir!)
Sorting through old boxes in the attic, for example, can bring back memories long forgotten. Some memories are joyful and worth holding onto, while others may carry pain or regret.
This process of deciding what to keep and what to let go mirrors the spiritual work of forgiveness and renewal.
It’s about making space for all things new by releasing the weight of the past.
Key Connections Between Cleanliness and Mental Health
Did you know that a clean and organized environment enhances mental clarity, reduces stress, fosters focus, boosts productivity, and promotes calmness? That's amazing! Let's take a closer look:
Reduced Anxiety: A tidy space limits distractions and improves focus.
Improved Mood: Cleaning releases endorphins, improving mood and reducing stress.
Enhanced Productivity: A clutter-free workspace enhances focus and higher-order thinking.
Better Sleep: A clean, organized bedroom is linked to better sleep.
Having a clean and organized home is an ongoing effort and the benefits have long-lasting effects.
Our heart as well — once it is clean and free of clutter can have long-lasting effects on our health and wellness.
Forgiveness as a Key to Spring Cleaning the Soul
One of the most difficult aspects of this inner cleansing is forgiveness.
Every morning during my devotions, I often seek God's mercy and forgiveness for myself...
But do I offer that same grace to others?
This thought struck me recently after I criticized my husband for things he did 30 years ago. (We've been married for 31 years.)
The following morning, I felt a strong reprimand from the Lord.
During devotions, while thanking the Lord for His mercies renewed every morning, the verse, "Blessed are the merciful; for they shall obtain mercy," resonated deeply within me.
I then realized that I hope for God's mercies and forgiveness daily but I'm not extending those same things to my husband. I'm still holding onto grudges from 30 years ago - yikes!
Forgiveness isn't just about forgetting; it’s about liberating ourselves from the weight of memories tied to resentment and anger.
"The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. "The Lord is my portion," says my soul, "therefore I will hope in him," (Lamentations 3:22-23, ESV).
Reflecting on this scripture reminds me that the Lord's mercies are renewed every morning— not just for me, but for everyone.
Each morning, the Lord gives all of us another opportunity to do things right, if we do the same.
Also consider that after we receive the Lord's mercies (forgiveness, second chances, etc.), He doesn't revisit all our past wrongs once they are forgiven, and we shouldn't revisit the negative actions of others.
If I wish to receive the Lord's mercies, His forgiveness, and another chance to make things right, I must also extend the same mercies to everyone else, including my husband.
This truth motivates me to approach life with a fresh perspective, offering forgiveness to those who have hurt me by giving them another chance.
It also challenges me to forgive myself for past mistakes.
When I forgive, I open the door for a cleansing to sweep through my soul, promoting spiritual growth and personal development in my life—which I love, love, love.
You know what? I see my husband differently now. Isn't that wonderful? I no longer hold those things against him. In fact, I view him with eyes of mercy, just as the Lord desires His followers (Christians) to do.
The Lord wants to extend mercy to us, but we must heed what the scripture says: "Blessed are the merciful; for they shall obtain mercy."
Here are some practical steps that have helped me forgive during my spring renewal:
Identify the memories or grudges that weigh you down. (Write them on paper.)
Pray or meditate on releasing these burdens. (Ask God for strength to forgive.)
Consider the perspective of others involved. (This helps to soften any hardened feelings.)
Replace negative thoughts with positive affirmations. (Let all things become new.)
Seek support from trusted friends, family, or spiritual leaders. (Share your journey with trusted people who can help lighten the load.)
Embracing New Beginnings Through Reflection and Action
Spring is a season of growth and transformation. Just as plants shed old leaves and bloom anew, we can embrace new beginnings by cleaning our heart and mind.
This process requires effort and time, but the rewards are profound.
Taking time for inner reflection while performing physical tasks like cleaning can deepen the experience.
For example, while I sorted through attic boxes for a flea market booth, memories surfaced that needed attention.
This unexpected encounter with the past became an opportunity for me to practice forgiveness and renewal.
Now each morning, I thank the Lord for His daily mercy and consider whom I can show mercy to.
To make the most of this spring season, consider these ideas:
Set aside regular moments for quiet reflection during daily routines. (Mornings work best for me. I get up before everyone else and have the house to myself, which is heavenly.)
Create a ritual to symbolize letting go, such as writing down what you want to release and safely burning the paper. (Or throwing it away.)
Celebrate progress by acknowledging the changes in your thoughts and feelings. (Reward yourself by doing something you've always wanted to do.)
Use scripture or inspirational readings to guide your mindset toward hope and renewal. (Place Scripture around the home for daily reminders.)

Moving Forward with a Clean Heart and Mind
Spring cleaning is more than a chore; it is a powerful metaphor for spiritual growth and personal development.
By taking time to clean both heart and home, we create space for new beginnings and invite peace into our life.
This season, I let the mercies of the Lord be my guide as I forgive, release, and renew.
I remind myself that all things are new when I choose to let go of the past and embrace the present with hope.
The effort I put into this inner cleaning brings clarity, joy, and a fresh start.
After my emotional spring cleaning, my eyes see my husband differently now — through eyes of mercy.
Thank the Lord for His promptings! I want to grow and develop into the woman He wants me to be!
