Scott Adams Inspired My Writing Journey
This week, I learned that Scott Adams passed away. It hit me deeply because his book How to Fail at Almost Anything and Still Win Big changed my life. His ideas about building systems to get things done inspired me to write my own book. It’s been six years since I first read his work, and I still think about the lessons he shared. Today, I want to say farewell to Scott Adams and share how his insights shaped my writing journey.
Discovering Scott Adams and His Unique Approach
My husband introduced me to Scott Adams about seven years ago. He said, “I think you will like this book.” At first, I was hesitant. I didn’t really enjoy the Dilbert comic strip he wrote, so I wasn’t eager to pick up the book. Months later, curiosity got the better of me, and I finally started reading. I couldn’t put it down.
What struck me was how Scott focused on systems instead of goals. He explained that goals can fail us because they rely on motivation and luck. Systems, on the other hand, create habits and processes that keep us moving forward no matter what. This idea was simple but powerful. It gave me a new way to approach my own projects.
How Scott’s Systems Helped Me Write My Book
After finishing his book, I decided to apply his systems to my writing - and I began a manuscript! I set up daily routines and small, manageable tasks instead of aiming for a big, intimidating goal like “finish the book.” This approach helped me stay consistent and avoid burnout.
Within 15 months, I completed my manuscript. It felt like a huge achievement, but then the journey continued. My manuscript sat on a shelf in my office for three years. During that time, I almost forgot the momentum Scott’s systems had given me.
The Long Road to Publishing
Eventually, a publishing company reached out to me. I was excited but ended up choosing a different publisher. The process took two years, filled with edits, revisions, and waiting.
Throughout this long journey, I often thought back to Scott Adams’ story. He faced serious health issues but kept pushing forward. His resilience inspired me to keep going even when the path seemed slow and uncertain.

Remembering Scott Adams Beyond the Book
I don’t recall any off-color comments or controversies about Scott Adams. What I remember most is his honesty about his struggles and how he overcame them. His book became the most successful business book of all time, which speaks to how many people found value in his message.
Scott’s approach wasn’t about quick fixes or flashy success. It was about building strong habits and systems that work over time. That’s a lesson I carry with me every day.
What Scott Adams Taught Me That You Can Use
If you want to get things done, whether it’s writing a book or any other goal, here are some practical takeaways from Scott Adams’ philosophy:
Focus on systems, not goals
Build routines that keep you moving forward daily.
Accept failure as part of the process
Learn from mistakes instead of fearing them.
Prioritize your health and energy
Scott emphasized how important it was to manage his health to stay productive.
Be patient and persistent
Success often takes time, and consistent effort wins over quick bursts.
Keep your motivation flexible
Systems work even when motivation fades.
These ideas helped me finish my book and keep going through the ups and downs of publishing. I hope they inspire you too.
Scott Adams’ passing is a reminder of the impact one person’s ideas can have on many lives. His book gave me the tools to turn my dream into reality. Saying farewell feels bittersweet, but I am grateful for his legacy.
If you haven’t read How to Fail at Almost Anything and Still Win Big, I encourage you to explore it. You might find the same inspiration I did.
